LATE FALL-EARLY WINTER

Friday November 2nd-4th & 9th-11th

Sahara Dance
4433 Wisconsin Ave
Washington D.C. 20016

Sahara Dance is pleased to host Sahra Saeeda’s Journey through Egypt Workshop Intensive / Certification Series!

Journey through Egypt (JtE) is a structured series of intensive workshops, providing an in-depth look at the various dance zones of Egypt. Each “Intensive” views Egypt’s Folkloric dance from a different perspective.

JtE-1 and JtE-2 are held in studios, classrooms and reception halls worldwide.

JtE-1 (Intensive/Certification 22-hr Workshop)
Draws upon films, lecture, study materials, map, and dance instruction. JtE-1 introduces the students to the wide variety of dance styles in Egypt with an overview of movement, costume, historical diffusion, and geographical location.

JtE-2 (Intensive/Certification 22-hr Workshop)
Provides an advanced overview, including the basis for future research, student specialization, dance ethnology concepts. Students investigate the dance differences between “home-style,” local professional dance, regional government troupes, Cairo-based Reda and Kowmeyya national troupes, and folkloric representation in night club shows.

Learn about the Dance of Egypt from a deeper perspective.
If you are not just a tourist, if you are hungry to understand,
if you don’t want to simply learn another choreography,
this may be the start of your journey.

Using dance ethnology concepts and a multi-media/experiential approach, Sahra C. Kent presents each region’s story of culture and dance, historical diffusion, costume and dress, posture and movement.

All intensives include a certificate upon completion. Certification is awarded to only those who complete all 22 hours of each course (44 hours total).

Friday Nov. 2, Saturday Nov. 3, Sunday Nov. 4, 2018 - JtE I (22 hours)
Friday Nov. 9, Saturday Nov. 10, Sunday Nov. 11, 2018 - JtE II (22 hours

The 1950s to the 80s was the "Nightclub Era" of belly dance. During this time you could see belly dancing and live music seven nights a week.

Because of the similarities in culture and cuisine, the Armenian, Greek, and Lebanese communities mingled at each others' clubs and restaurants Boston became a melting pot of eastern Mediterranean music and, ironically - considering its puritanical reputation - the city became a national hot spot for belly dance.

In this presentation, Amy Smith will share highlights of her research on this part of belly dance history centering around Boston.

WHO: "Dance is Emotion in Motion" aptly describes Aszmara. For over 40 years, Aszmara has been inspiring dancers as a teacher and performer with International Tours, Workshops and Seminars across USA & Europe. As a Master Teacher, her deep love of the dance shines out to all she teaches, beginners through professionals, leading them to find their own expressive passion in the dance.

In the 80's and 90's she was co-director of two dance companies; the award winning Middle Eastern dance company, Oriental Images and the ground breaking SaZ Dance Theater, creating themed concert events, folkloric and innovative dances. Aszmara's articles have appeared in The Gilded Serpent, Bhuz and Bennu magazines and her instructional DVD, Belly Dance... The Secret Desire has received high accolades.

Souren Baronian (Clarinet/Duduk/Riq) This unstoppable maestro is now in his eighties—the Armenian-American multi-reedman, percussionist and bandleader is absolutely undiminished as a soloist, one of the greatest and most soulful players in the history of jazz, let alone the Middle Eastern jazz he’s pioneered.

Introduction to Moroccan Chaabi:

What is chaabi maghribi? This class is about 1) connecting with the 6/8 rhythms of chaabi and understanding it's polyrhythmic heartbeat 2) introduction to basic footwork and muscle isolation to achieve the correct Moroccan aesthetic 3) learn, rinse, repeat, - absorbing the basic "body of knowledge" by muscle memory and repetition of common chaabi dance moves. Esraa's chaabi style is "Chikhat" inspired.

Moroccan Chaabi Advanced Beginners :

This workshop will review the basics and continue in building muscle memory of common chaabi movements. We will also build upon them by crafting the "gallop" and the aesthetic of playfulness, which are 2 critical components of chaabi. We will find a little more comfort in how these moves look on different bodies. Lastly we will end the class with a dance circle in order to practice our improvisation and social dancing. Beginners who missed the first part are more than welcome to come to this class.

Please wear something loose and comfortable and bring a scarf.

BIO:
Esraa Warda is a North African performance and teaching artist originally from Algeria. Having grown up between Brooklyn and Algeria, she was introduced to dance within informal women's spaces and weddings and was quickly acknowledged as a talented dancer within her community. Esraa represents the "neo-traditional" generation of artists who keep tradition alive with a new age spin. She now professionally teaches and performs Algerian/Moroccan styles such as Chaabi, Rai, Chaoui, Kabyle, and Reggada/Allaoui. Her dance style and teaching methods are non-commercial and focused on the "transmission" of body knowledge mirroring the same way she learned - through dance circles and muscle memory! She believes that her artistry must be valuable to the transformation and evolution of culture in the diaspora, while also retaining the spirit of her ancestors.

Esraa’s personal artistic pedagogy is centered around politicising cultural work to keep North African dance technique authentic (and African-centered!) in the face of cultural imperialism/appropriation. She continues to perform at dozens of local North African traditional gatherings and cultural festivals, such as the May Day Festival of Resistance, and at transnational feminist events such as the Havana Habibi Festival in Cuba. She routinely curates and coordinates cultural events highlighting the musical link between different African diasporic communities in effort to emphasize the global “African-ness” that underlines our cultures. Esraa will be hosting dance and music workshops in Morocco in Spring 2019 as her “Roots and Rhythms” initiative and continues to travel around the US and Europe to teach, perform, and share her pedagogy. She also runs grassroots political African centric and anti-colonialist artistic projects around New York, such as the North African Radical Education Project and The Chaâb Lab - an Algerian/Moroccan music ensemble that uses participatory performances to engage African diasporic communities in cultural solidarity.
