7 week Improvisation Series with Farha

Let yourself get swept away, and relax your mind, into the music and the moment. This class series will slowly build on each exercise, allowing you to see your improvement over the 7 weeks.

Wednesdays, 6:00-7:00 at Bellydance America
Does improvisation feel like you're jumping for a trapeze without a safety net? It doesn't have to!

Improvisation is a skill that can be learned, by anyone! It is as different a skill from choreography as hip circles from chest bumps, and requires its own study. Farha's classes break down the sub-skills into digestible exercises, so you won't feel overwhelmed.

Improvisation is the soul of bellydance. Not only is it part of the native aesthetic, it allows a dancer to respond to his or her own feeling in the moment, to live music, and to interact with the audience. Even for dancers who prefer to perform choreography, improvisation is an essential skill for recovering from memory lapses, technical difficulties, or changes in your performance space (hello waiter with a flaming cheese tray!) and is useful for creating choreographies.
We'll be working on:
movement recall
transitions
creating contrast
avoiding over-dancing, and
staying in the music

$22 drop in (cash or check at the door)
$105 for all 7 weeks paid in advance (paypal, check, or cash)

Michelle Sorensen Long Island Intensive

Michelle Sorensen is coming to play with us out on Long Island!!

She is such a multi-faceted artist and I personally find her to be an awesome blend of cabaret and fusion concepts, which is what this weekend will be all about…but more on that when I post the topics (which I cannot stop squealing about and are not just bellydance!)

If you have not seen her work please check out these two videos:

Sat 5/5:

1:00pm - 3:00pm
“Press Pause: The Art of Silence”

Emily Dickinson said, “Saying nothing…sometimes says the most.” How often do we take opportunities for stillness in our dance? This workshop will focus on the breath between the “words” of our movement. We will learn a few unique combinations and then challenge our brains (and bodies) by adding silence and pause in different places throughout the combo, creating a sort of “musical chairs” game with dance!

3:30pm - 5:30pm
“Belly Work & Backbends” (SOLD OUT, PM for Waitlist)
Wanting to increase flexibility in your spine? Having a hard time making belly work smoooooth? If so, this class is for you! The focus in this workshop will be on conditioning the core, and learning to make those muscles work together seamlessly to create fluidity and dexterity in stomach isolations. We will then stretch those muscles out with a long focus on back flexibility based on contortion style training. Come prepared to work hard and sweat!

Sunday 5/6 -

11:00am -1:00 pm

“Creature Calisthenics”
Learn creative combos inspired by mythical and fairy tale creatures (think mermaids, monsters etc) complete with appropriate music for each! Use all or part of each combo to create a dance that is truly unique! We will also discuss how to tastefully convey “characters” without being melodramatic or overly literal.

2:00 - 4:00
“Kotch It If You Can”
Come twerk it with me! In this workshop you will learn a fast-paced Jamaican Dancehall inspired fusion choreography. We’ll be moving and sweating a LOT, so dress comfortably!

Who is Michelle?

Based in Salt Lake City, UT, Michelle Sorensen is a professional Belly Dancer with nearly a decade of dedicated dance training. She began her studies under the direction of Kismet School of Dance (American), Kashmir Dance Company (ATS & Tribal Fusion), Trisha Mcbride (Tribal Fusion and Experimental) and more recently Rachel Brice (8 elements Phases 1 &2, Initiation and Cultivation Certified) and Stephanie Buranek (Cabaret/Egyptian). She has also sought continued instruction through workshops and other events from some of the most innovative dancers in and out of the belly dance scene.

Along with bellydance, she has discovered a love for the Aerial Arts, Exotic Dance, Contemporary Dance and Dancehall/Twerk. “Cross-training” in these genres of dance has helped her with stamina, strength, flexibility and finding her own artistic voice. Her life is also occupied with being a mother of 2 sweet little girls who are a constant inspiration to push boundaries and a reminder to explore!

Sunday, May 6
10:00-12:00 The Curve of the Scimitar
1:00-3:00 Not Your Average Sword Dance
3:30-5:30 Forays into Double Sword Dance

Workshop Descriptions:
“BELLY and the BLADE”
Belly dancing and sword dance go hand-in-blade! We’ll work with the sword to frame and enhance belly dance movements, layer belly and core moves with balancing, shimmy with it, travel with it and more. Suitable for beginners to advanced dancers: we’ll start slow, with optional layers for advanced dancers, and build to a beautiful crescendo!
All levels welcome.

“DROP-DEAD SWORD DANCING”
Move beyond just head balancing! Intermediate single sword presentation including thigh and hip balance, arm & hand balance, flips and grabs, and sword manipulations like “tornado” and “scoop doubleback” to make for a sword dance that’s anything but routine.
Some previous sword recommended (such as "Belly and the Blade").

“THE CURVE of the SCIMITAR” (a.k.a, The Sword is Not a Hat)What do you do with the sword when you are not balancing it on your head? In belly dance, the arched blade of the scimitar echoes the curves of the body and the rounded movements of the hips. This workshop focuses on using that curve to the max in sword manipulations, frames and shapes that we create with the sword before, after, and between balance points. Learn one-and two-handed manipulations, tricks for traveling with the sword, and creating beautiful shapes that make your dance stand out from the crowd.
All levels welcome.

“NOT YOUR AVERAGE SWORD ROUTINE: DANGEROUS SWORD IMPROVISATION for SOLOISTS, DUETS, and TROUPES"
Moves and cues for improvisational sword dance to fill your troupe sword dance with energy--and you can apply them to your solo sword performances as well. This class focuses on cued improvisational group sword dance, using multiple balance points, clean isolations, and Sabine's own Dangerous Group Sword moves, like "Red Sonya” "Kayak Switch" and “Raj Wave,” using lead-and-follow format for improv. Attendees should bring a sword and a cotton head wrap. No battle-ready swords, please. Some previous sword recommended (such as "Belly and the Blade").
“FORAYS into DOUBLE SWORD DANCE”
You know how to work one sword, but what the heck do you do with two? Introduce a second sword into your performance and you will have the crowd in the palm of your hand! This workshop shows how to start a performance with one sword and then add a second sword (including ideas for how to even pick it up if you already have one balanced), then how to manipulate and balance a second sword using isolations, travelling movements, and even a little floorwork. Appropriate for intermediate and up dancers with some experience balancing a sword. Attendees should bring one or two swords (we’ll trade and share!), a head wrap, and kneepads. No battle-ready swords, please.
Prerequisite: The four workshops presented here. This will ensure a good grounding in combos to carry forward with the double sword instruction more readily.
