December Spotlight: Amira Iriz

December Dancer Spotlight


Every month we will be spotlighting a dancer in Westchester county.  This month, our spotlight turns to Amira Iriz!


Amira Iriz's great grandparents settled in San German, Puerto Rico, having immigrated from Sevilla, Spain. Amira's actual surname, Irizarry, is Basque. Amira was born in Manhattan and lived on West 64th Street where Lincoln
Center for the Performing Arts now stands. She lived most of her life in the Bronx until she moved to Scarsdale, New York. Throughout her life she had been an avid ice skater, dancing and gliding since the age of 11 with accomplished ISIA levels in Free Style Ice Skating. Growing up Amira loved classical music and took up the clarinet at age 13 playing in orchestras as a teen at Lincoln Center, The Waldorf Astoria, Avery Fisher Hall and on local radio stations. In addition, she also played guitar and "dabbled" in piano and oboe. Because of a jaw surgery Amira does not play clarinet anymore but still enjoys classical music. Amira had also served 24 years in the New York Air National Guard (Air Force), retired in 2009 and holds the rank of Master Sergeant.

In Middle Eastern dance, Amira Iriz is best known for her easy style and ready smile. She has performed for over 15 years at numerous multi-ethnic restaurants, private functions and clubs in the tri-state area, including regular international performances in Cancun, Mexico. Amira Iriz has also sponsored student showcases, professional only shows with notables such as Aszmara Sherry, Julia-Jewel of the Nile, Layla Mary, Rayhana, Shoshana, Oreet Jehassi Schwartz and Zoë Kennedy. She was also the director of New York's only sword dancing Troupe, The Serpentine Sword Dancers.

Today, Amira Iriz enjoys mentoring fellow new Middle Eastern dancers, dancing for Belly Dancers for Charity, and helping others achieve their goals in dance. With her first Manhattan showcase, The Light of the Arabian World in 2002, her goal was to bring new dancers to the forefront by sponsoring them and putting them in the limelight. While time has gone by and so have many shows, Amira has returned to this original goal by privately mentoring dancers and started showcases in restaurants such as Shukaila Lebanese & Indian Cuisine in Yonkers, NY once again as she did this past November 2013. She plans to expand showcase events in 2014 in both Westchester County which she now calls home since 2009 in Scarsdale, NY and New York City.

Amira has been reviewed by Jareeda Magazine as "breathtaking" and "having beautiful hand gestures complimentary to her every move...."

November Spotlight: Nahara

November Dancer Spotlight


Every month we will be spotlighting a dancer in Westchester county.  This month, our spotlight turns to Nahara!

Passionate, sensual, and earthy, Nahara weaves baladi feeling with Egyptian oriental technique. She came to this dance with a long history of other genres of dance: Disco, ballroom, jazz, ballet, and Sub-Saharan African but after one belly dance class in 1990 she left all those behind. By 1992 she was teaching and founded the Cornell University Belly Dance troupe Teszia.

In 2001 she spent a month in Cairo learning about the culture, dances, and performing on a Cairo 5 star stage. She would later return again to Cairo in 2008 to continue her studies and attend the famous Ahlan Wa Sahlan festival. In 2003 and 2005 Nahara hosted a three day conference on North African Dance featuring several world renowned teachers and performers such as Aisha Ali, Sahra Saeeda, Morocco, Faten Salema, and Amel Tafsout.

Currently Nahara teaches Egyptian oriental (raqs sharqi) and all of its associated props, as well as Baladi, Tunisian Sha’abi, and Moroccan Shikhat at Josie’s International school of Dance. Nahara’s passion is hosting shows and workshops in order to bring this dance to more people and inspire the ones who already know it to learn something new. She will be hosting Spring Shimmie this spring 2014 and soon will be starting a monthly drum and dance circle at Josie’s studio.

Nahara enjoys supporting the local belly dance community as a whole and inviting all local dancers/teachers to participate in her events. She truly lives by her own quote “Without dance I cannot feel my soul, hear my heart, or see my dreams”

October Spotlight: Gina

October Dancer Spotlight


Every month we will be spotlighting a dancer in Westchester county.  This month, our spotlight turns to La Gina!



Gina Bergamini was most recently seen at the New York Renaissance Faire with the dance company, Gimme Shimmy. Previously, she danced as a company member of the NYC based troupes the Dalia Carella Dance Collective, Altagracia’s Caribbean Rose Dancers, and of Westchester’s own Bellyissima.

Lately, Gina has focused her energies in Westchester. She performed for a few seasons as a dancer in New Rochelle Opera Company, with choreography by Aszmara Sherry. Gina has also gone back to her musical theater roots and appeared as the Nightingale in Bedford Community Theater’s Once Upon a Mattress.


Gina trained extensively in Oriental dance, under the tutelage of Dalia Carella, Altagracia Bruno, and the late Serena Wilson of Serena Studios. Gina has also trained in ballet, modern, jazz, voice, and musical theater. She holds a Master of Arts in Teaching and a Bachelor degree in Music. When she is not performing or teaching dance, she is found conducting early childhood music and dance classes and maintaining a preschool classroom. Since she believes that striving for excellence as a performer and a teacher means lifelong learning, Gina continues to takes lessons and workshops in music, dance, and education.

Cairo, Egypt Superstar dancer and choreographer Diana Tarkhan is coming to our studio for a workshop and gala show! We are the last stop on her acclaimed USA tour so don’t miss this opportunity to study belly dance with an internationally renowned artist. Diana Tarkhan spent many years living in Egypt and working as a professional 5 star hotel dancer there. As a highly respected authority on Egyptian dance and featured in the video series “Masters of Egyptian Choreography”, she now travels internationally to share her skills and knowledge with others. Beginners will gain an understanding of what Egyptian style is, be challenged with earthy passionate movements, and see how Egyptian dance plays with the music. Intermediate level and advanced students will walk away with improved Egyptian technique, add to their Egyptian movement vocabulary, and have a fantastic Egyptian oriental choreography to add to their repertoire.

September Spotlight: Oracle

September Dancer Spotlight

Every month we will be spotlighting a dancer in Westchester county.  This month, our spotlight turns to the Mystic Oracle!




Oracle hails from the southern lands of Georgia and has just recently begun to grace the stages in New York and Connecticut.  Bellydancing since 2000, Oracle has brought forth a theatrical quality to her tribal teachings, elegantly fusing the American nightclub and vaudeville stylings as well as the American Tribal Style for a performance described as sassy, sensual, and thoughtful. 

Oracle was the director of the Jahara Phoenix Dance Company in Lawrenceville, GA until 2012 when she moved north to Westchester county.  While teaching through the World Heritage Cultural Orazanization, Oracle was able to begin a new dance company, the Delphi Dance Ensemble. Oracle no longer teaches weekly classes, instead she dedicates her time to her performance company.  Currently, she is collaborating with the Westchester Circus Arts and the Weight Boys Band for a exciting new cabaret show in Westchester county. 

Her title of "Mystic Oracle" was generously given to her by Onca O'Leary at the Americana Burlesque and Sideshow Festival in Asheville, NC in 2007 where she wow'ed the crowd with her sensual sword act.   Oracle's ability to transform herself for any situation  has enabled her to perform for a variety of venues, from conservative church and school functions to sassy burlesque shows.

With that ability and the magic of enchanting her audience has truly proven her to be - The Mystic Oracle.

August Spotlight: Delphi Dance Ensemble

Every month we will be spotlighting a dancer in Westchester county.  This month, our spotlight turns to the Delphi Dance Ensemble!

Based in Pleasantville, NY, the Delphi Dance Ensemble was formed by Oracle, a recent transplant from Lawrenceville, GA and the former director of the Jahara Phoenix Dance Company.  In 2012 the dancers of Delphi began as an advanced class through the World Heritage Cultural Center in Pleasantville, and soon began to grow from class to stage. 

The dancers of Delphi have varied performance backgrounds, from ballroom to theater, and everything in between.  Their particular style of bellydance is considered "world tribal fusion" which means they fuse movement together from many areas of the world, but the special bellydance technique leans more heavily in the tribal style.

The Delphi Dance Ensemble specializes in festival performances where they draw in their audience with their relaxed and genuine presence.  Past performances include the Ossining Village Fair, Armonk Global Village, Oyster Music and Arts Festival, Ossining SummerFest, and many more.  Their performances are interactive and family-friendly and a delight for  audiences of all ages.

“Belly Beats" Rhythms and Drum Circle for Dancers” 
A female bonding experience like you have never had before! Lift your dancing to new heights by learning the rhythms of belly dance music and dancing to live drumming created by you and your classmates. Understanding the rhythms is a crucial step toward "feeling" the music in your heart and hips as well as help you to communicate with musicians. You won't believe how your dancing improves once you have a firm understanding of the rhythms. Loaner drums will be provided but if you have a Middle Eastern drum already bring it along. If you prefer to sit on a cushion or pillow bring that along too as we will be siting on the floor for much of the class.

Learn Technique, Isolations, Drills & Combinations in a fun environment with International Belly Dancer Nourhan Sharif for 2 hours.  Bring your questions, a smile and a shimmy!  Nourhan is known for sharing her flawless technique along with a generous teaching spirit she will share as much as possible to bring your dancing to the next level.  Drill rhythm into your soul while having fun doing it.  Be ready to sweat, learn, laugh and smile!

August 19th
Assaya Cane Choreography (for open levels) with Nourhan Sharif (visiting guest artist from NYC): 
Nourhan is known for her earthy Saidi movements and improvisation with the Assaya.  More earthy and heavy than urban Cairo music.  The scratchy cry of the rababa and the swirling shout of the mizmar, inspire a strong yet playful dance.  The canes twirl and strike to the pounding Saidi beat of the huge Tabla Baladi.  All the women and men of Southern Egypt enjoin in the optimistic tradition of Upper Egyptian dance.  Their long galabayya flows with the song. The altitude is high, but the center of gravity is low!  Nourhan will teach a full choreography.  Be prepared to learn and work.  It's suggested that you purchase Nourhan's Rhythms CD Vol. 1 before this class in order to get the most from the class.  Available at Josie's Studio this week.  Nourhan will also be selling canes.

Develop muscle awareness, flexibility and mind-body connection and apply these skills to the basic art of belly dance and explore posture, arms positions, hip work, isolations, shimmies and more.  Add excitement and professionalism to your performance with finger cymbals.  Build on your basic movement vocabulary of belly dance with finger cymbal (zil) patterns.  Explore the basic and popular rhythms and learn how to layer different belly dance movements with drills to help build stamina, coordination and agility.  Zils can be purchased at Josie’s studio.
