Late Winter Warm Up

Tribal Sword Level 2 

with Melissa Wlodarczyk

Melissa is back at Dance Phillipsburg for Level 2! Take your sword dance to the next level. Material presented in this 3 hour workshop will include Level 2 vocabulary from the Tribal Bellies improv language. Dancers are not required to lead. This is simply an introduction to sword moves that can be used in future choreography. Review of Level 1 will also be covered. I hope you'll join me! Let's shake the winter chill away with some hot sword moves and good company!
Be sure to bring comfy dance clothes, your own sword, water, and a snack.

All students will receive a printout explaining the vocabulary as well as review videos.

Orientalism in American Art and The Silvermine Art Colony

The New Canaan Historical Society presents a new exhibit featuring American artists who traveled, painted and often lived for extended periods in this vast region from Morocco stretching across North Africa, Egypt, The Holy Lands, Persia to India.  In the 19th Century this mostly Islamic world became known as the “Orient,” and the European and American artists who began venturing into this land as early as 1840 were called “Orientalists.”  The show includes paintings and etchings by American artists, including those from the thriving Silvermine artist colony, as well as decorative objects, jewelry, textiles and furniture. This exhibit runs from January 7th — March 31st, 2018. This exhibit will feature the following events:
ORIENTALISM IN AMERICAN ART SPEAKER – ZUHAIR SUIDAN
Zuhair Suidan, management consultant and former president of the New Canaan Men’s Club, will speak at The New Canaan Historical Society on January 28, 2018, at 2 pm. His talk, “Where To? Just last year Kelvia won second place in the Houston Oriental Bellydance Festival. In 2015, she flew to Egypt to train first hand and was able to study intensively & perform in Lebanon. She's beloved all over CT for her passionate approach to this art form. Don't miss this great chance to learn so much from this talented performer!

The darkness and freezing cold of winter will inspire our featured dancers in this one-of-a-kind showcase. Come and be mesmerized by the darker side of tribal bellydance in a unique event space hosted by Stone and Key Cellars. 

Our headliners for the evening will be The Lunachix! This dynamic tribal fusion troupe from Oneonta, NY has appeared in many shows and festivals throughout the east coast including Art of the Belly, East Coast Classic, Raven's Night, and Tribal Momentum. Their director, Jo Boring, will also be offering 4 workshops throughout the weekend in the HotPot ITS style at the Tribal Bellies Studio!

Dancers donate their talents to create the highest caliber performance event in CT. Children sell tickets to this amazing event to raise money for their continued dance training! They use the money raised to hire dance professionals from NYC, CT and surrounding areas to teach them during their Kids Summer intensive weeklong. 

If you have attended any of our prior events, you already know that this is NOT an event you want to miss!!
