HOT POT in the City
with Jo Boring

This is Jo's first time teaching in NYC! She's bringing ITS (Improvisational Tribal Style) technique, combos and group improv and we're putting on a show! Let the Beast Coast roar!

From www.improvisationaltribalstyle.com:
ITS is a combination-based form of improvisational dance created by Amy Sigil of Hot Pot Studio. This energetic dance is all about teamwork, having fun and being actively engaged in the moment. ITS relies on a shared vocabulary of movements, each initiated by a distinct cue movement. The leader initiates the cue movement, then a short, choreographed combination, or combo, is performed. These combos can be done in any order, and none of the dancers know ahead of time which movements the leader will cue next.

The workshops:

Bellydance Musicality Series

By Farha Dances

Bellydance America
365 W 37th Streey

New York, NY 10018

8 week workshop series: 6 weeks of exercises to improve your relationship to Middle Eastern music. You'll be able to remember choreographies better, make your own, and even improvise more easily. Bellydance is the music made visible, so make sure you understand what the music is telling you! Not only will your dancing improve, but so will your confidence, because you can relax knowing that if you just pick interesting music and follow it then your dancing will be interesting

1st class: we will build a foundation including distinguishing between the beat and the rhythms, understanding the divisions of a beat, finding the one in a count, and learning to hear the difference between tempo changes and rhythm decoration. We will also practice techniques for committing to your moves and keeping your step on the beat.

2nd class: we will apply what we learned in the first to recognizing rhythm patterns and get an introduction to matching our step choices to those rhythms.

3rd class: begins our focus on the melody with exploring how to get the most out of the moves you already know so that no matter what your body is set up for you will be able to make it work with the changes in the music.

4th class: we will explore the most common instruments in Arabic music and categorize our moves based on what fits their textures. At the end we will play a game to help your improvisation skills!

5th class: starts the foundation for song structure with learning to find the phrases in a piece. We will do exercises to help you naturally hear where a song makes a sentence, and practice aligning our transitions with the musicians'.

6th class: is all about music mapping. Using what we've learned about rhythm, instruments, and phrasing we will build a song from sentences to paragraphs and chapters, and learn how mapping is used differently depending on whether you are preparing a choreography or improvising.

7th & 8th class: students apply what they have learned to music of their choice, and get feedback from Farha and their classmates. Based on interest there can be an opportunity for students to perform their pieces in a show, but you can also prepare a piece in class even if you don't want to put it on stage.

The schedule is:
Rhythms and steps (Jan 24 & 31)
Instruments and textures (Feb 7 & 14)
Phrasing and song structure. Feb 21 & 28)
Applying class work to students' solos (performing is optional. Must have taken the whole series) (March 7 & 14)
