Moroccan Chaabi: African Meets Arabic Movement

Cumbe
1368 Fulton St., Brooklyn, NY 11216
Join us at Cumbe for an exclusive dance experience exploring one of North Africa's popular traditional dances, Moroccan Chaabi. Chaabi means ‘of people’ and represents the culture, voice and spirit of the people. While this dance has some similarities to Middle Eastern belly dance movements like shimmying the hips and waist, Chaabi is decidedly African. As is common with African-rooted dance traditions, Moroccan Chaabi is body positive, women-centered, improvisational and communal. Through muscle memory repetitions, students will learn the fundamental movement vocabulary to learn this social dance.

Acknowledged as a talented dancer within her cultural community at 13 years old, Esraa Warda is now one of the premier North African performance and teaching artists based in New York City. Esraa is of Algerian origin and professionally teaches and performs Algerian/Moroccan styles such as Chaabi, Rai, Chaoui, Kabyle and Reggada/Allaoui in NYC and around the world. Her teaching methods are now focused on reproducing the same context in which she learned - through ‘transmission’ via muscle memory within women’s dance circles and jams. Despite being on the African continent, Moroccan and Algerian dances are often disconnected and lumped into Middle Eastern/Arab culture. Esraa aims to pioneer the representation of these dances as African in the cultural landscape both institutionally and informally.

Award Winning Dancer and Musician, Jennifer Belly dance joins us at the MDA for this extraordinary training in musicality! This is a MUST from all students of Oriental dance!

You know how to dance, but do you know how to TRULY hear the musical changes that are part of the intricacies of Oriental composition?

Learn about ear training, creating musicality skeletons and gain a high level of understanding from a competitive musician in her day.

Students often share that they have a hard time choreographing and after over a decade of working with dancers, what I have discovered is that they often hear only 50% of the music.

Learn how to train your ears in this interactive workshop where you will be working in groups and dissecting the music al lines so that the piece can truly be danced the way the composer intended it to be.

Come Dance to Live Music with Kaeshi Chai + a live instrumentalist!

For this week's Dance Lab, Kaeshi Chai returns to lead a class where we will pay homage to our collective home, planet earth, and embody the spirit of forests and the ocean with guided movement exercises. Our ears will be tuned into the intricate nuances of melody and rhythm, helping us to express our unique dances and improvise with freedom and confidence in a safe space. She will be joined by musician, Mal Stein.

The end of this class will flow right into an Ecstatic Dance DJ set with DJ Illexxandra, ending with a sound meditation + closing circle with Julia Izabela.

Space is limited, so we suggest getting your tickets in advance.
.
Dance Lab is a weekly class presented by Ecstatic Dance NYC with the intention of creating a consistent space for us to gather as a community to Dance. It will be lighter version of the monthly Ecstatic Dances; fewer people, a more intimate space and some facilitation to experiment with different ways of expressing ourselves using sound and movement. Each class will have a warm-up class, where we will invite in different teachers from various forms of Dance, movement, singing and other modalities for us to explore and experiment with. From there, we will transition into an Ecstatic Dance with a DJ where we will integrate what we learned during the class into the Dance itself.
.

(This price is for all 3 days and cannot be split)

This workshop cannot be split. All 20 hours (3 days) are required to take the next part(s). (The Journey Through Egypt course concludes Parts 3 & 4 in Egypt! The first 2 parts are required.)

Location: Creative Dance Arts Studio
2037 U.S. 9, Round Lake, NY 12151

Journey Through Egypt Part 1 is an overview on the movement, posture, clothing, history, and cultural diffusion in the different regions of Egypt. Sahra’s unique perspective follows how the dance transforms from the homes of the people to the sparkling stages of Cairo.

While the particularities of every dance, and every bit of culture cannot be conveyed in the 20 hours that make up JtE- 1, Sahra strives to present a factual and entertaining overview of the dances of Egypt.

Classroom time is divided between lecture, dance instruction and trying on clothing from each of the regions discussed.

The dances studied include:
Bedouin
Ghawazee
Cairo
Sa’idi
Nubian
Haggallah
Suez Canal
Fellahin

These dances are put into the context of the local culture and histories. Their transformation from homestyle to the stage is also covered in depth. For several of the dances the students break from lecture to stretch their muscles and learn the movements that can traditionally be found in these dances. The way that these dances have been interpreted and adapted for the stage is also discussed and shown.

The course also covers many of the rights and rituals that can be found throughout Egypt, such as zeffah, zars, and moulids. Whenever possible, these rituals are described and explained with video Sahra has taken on one of her own research journeys to Egypt. Here you’ll find a play by play of what you’re seeing and how it is affected by culture and people’s perceptions.

About Sahra Saeeda:
While Sahra had always been interested in the intersection of culture and dance (her Bachelors was in Cultural Anthropology and Archaeology), a need to grow as a dancer sent her to the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) where she pursued a Masters degree in Dance Ethnology.
Through the course of her study, she had the amazing good fortune to find a great friend and mentor in her program, Farida Fahmy. When the time came to begin research for her thesis on the Zeffat al’Arusah, Farida encouraged her to come to Cairo and pursue that research in person.

While in Egypt she received a contract with the Meridian-Heliopolis 5-star hotel, which she held for nearly 6 years. Her position as a local dancer gave her an amazing springboard to learn about the zeffah, and so much more.

Journey Through Egypt is the brainchild of Sahra. After studying Dance Ethnology at UCLA and studying Egyptian Folkloric dance under Farida Fahmy, Sahra moved to Egypt to conduct research for her master’s thesis on the Zeffat al’Arusah.

During this research she discovered more and more about the culture & dances of Egypt. Applying her learning of Dance Ethnology and the advice of many of her local resources in Egypt the idea for Journey Through Egypt was born.

Sahra now teaches and dances around the world, sharing her theories on dance in Egypt, the regions, the “tables”, and the way everything fits together. She is constantly conducting more research with two trips to Egypt each year, every time hunting for that next “puzzle piece” that will reveal ever more about the dance, and the culture, that she fell in love with over 30 years ago.

Troupe Moirae is Fusionista Di’Ahna, Raks Sharki beauty Kaylin, and Tribal gal Baseema.

We met in a belly dance class in 2007.
And immediately became friends.
We were a student troupe. Then a semi-professional troupe.

We started with ITS and Tribal Fusion. Dance took us in separate directions with Orientale, American Tribal Style, and Fusion. But, we’ve always remained good friends. Since then, we have lived and breathed dance, and we have grown and made great connections with each other and with this amazing community.

We’re coming together, again, to share our collective knowledge with each other and with you!

In addition to Troupe Moirae, the anniversary gala will showcase some of the good friends we’ve met along the way!
