WHAT: Back by popular demand! In this 4-week session, we will focus on strengthening and flexibility drills, that will prepare you to work with any type of balancing props. Strength is key to being able to do a lot of the most interesting tricks and clean isolations are necessary for creating a truly boneless, smooth aesthetic. Please bring a yoga mat or a large towel, because we will spend a significant portion of the class on the floor, working on fun and challenging core, glute and back-strengthening exercises, that are guaranteed to help you gain strength and stamina. Lots of variations and adjustments will be provided to all exercises, to challenge you at your personal fitness level. Bring your choice of a balancing prop - be that sword, tray or a basket, and prepare to sweat and have fun! *If you don’t have a sword, please bring a roll of toilet paper an easy alternative. **This course is ideal for intermediate to advanced level belly dancers. Must have some belly dance experience.

WHO: Irina Akulenko is a New York City-based performer, teacher and choreographer with a burning passion for arts of all genres. Although she discovered Middle Eastern dance purely by chance, her interest in expression started at an early age and was channeled into ballet training, in addition to piano and voice lessons as well as drawing. Since 2001, Irina explored Egyptian Cabaret and American Tribal style belly dance, Flamenco and Classical Indian dances (focusing mainly on Odissi) and now enjoys fusing these styles as well as everything in between. Today, Irina performs on various New York stages and tours nationally and internationally as a soloist and as member of various stellar projects. She released three instructional DVDs with World Dance New York and has two instructional series of videos with the popular website “Howcast.com”. Furthermore, she holds a Bachelors degree in Political Science, and has a strong interest in women's issues and visual arts. www.DanceIrina.com

The 8 th Avenue (NYC) music and dance scene (1950-‘s – 1970’s) is an integral part of Middle Eastern music and dance legacy. Dancing to exquisite live music was the norm for professional dancers. Cultivating a deep understanding of a full
dance set and dancing more than one unique set per night elevated the craft and kept everyone coming back for more.
Join these legendary artists who grew up in this very creative and exciting time.
They’ll share their insights as too what makes a successful show and tips on communication between dancer and band.
Directly after the panel discussion the participants in the Drum and Dance Learning Center’s Solo Performance Project perform sections of a full show with the Souren Baronian Ensemble along with special guest artists Dalia Carella and Aszmara Sherry.
This is a unique opportunity for musicians, dancers and audience to get an inside look at what makes a quality show and how to maintain the integrity of the roots of the beautiful artform of Middle Eastern music and dance while creatively
expressing your contribution.

How do we achieve authenticity when we perform?
This workshop focuses on the balance between universal themes and our personal stories when we present a theatrical fusion piece. Exercises in projection, acting, physicality, meditation are just a few methods explored.
